 You would usually find a flat roof on extensions , garages, porches and car ports. 
There are many different systems for flat roofing, including EPDM rubber , GRP fibre glass and torch on felt system. 
Our advice and preference is the traditional 3 layer torch on felt system as we find it offers you the best affordability and will come with a 15 year guarantee.  
It is applied with a 3b base layer nailed down followed by 2 layers rolled up and torched down with a blowtorch.
